The Over Easter Outfit

A favour - I am finding this third wave, the tighter restrictions, the unknown of the variants, and the cancelled trip to my daughter's over a holiday weekend a bit too much. Up until now, I've been handling the pandemic situation fairly well and suddenly, it seems overwhelming and never ending. I've been sad and cranky. The blog is new. It doesn't have a large readership. It can be hard to stick with it and let it grow. Today, comments and passing on the link would be supportive, encouraging, and much appreciated. I would love some creative contact. Thank you.

Instead of making an Easter outfit, I decided to make an outfit over Easter. I sewed a V-neck t-shirt from a linen knit that has absolutely gorgeous drape. It feels wonderful on. More of that fabric is definitely on my list.

After that, I sewed a pair of denim pants. They were less than best and have already been altered to remove ease and add more shape to the leg. Now, they're only okay but I really needed some more pants so I imagine they will get worn until I have other options.

And, I also started The Sewing Workshop's out of print Trio Top from a double gauze. The fabric was fabulous to work with and I'd sew with it again too. The top doesn't suit me at all. It's all done except for the collar and collar stand and I've put it aside for a friend. If she wants to finish it, she can have it. I know I won't wear it.

I call this mixed success especially as I'd also hoped to make a piece of jewelry as part of the outfit and that didn't happen at all. I definitely thought I'd make a lot more progress than I did and it is what it is.

Today, I am working on a white t-shirt which is a once-in-a-decade-or-maybe-even-longer event. I couldn't begin to tell you the last time I had a white t-shirt. I don't even have a light, never mind a white, laundry load. This is highly unusual and could be useful in my wardrobe so I'm giving it a try. This pandemic situation is certainly an opportunity to try new things in the studio.

In an earlier posting - Never Another Groovy - I showed a bowl of yarn from taking apart a huge and unflattering scarf made from remnants. A friend's daughter is expecting and isn't finding out the gender in advance so I added a skein of pink and am knitting a boy sweater and a girl sweater from the yarn bowl. Above left are the body and sleeves of the two versions and above right is the remaining yarn. I plan to use the pink and green for the collars. It'll be interesting to see how much yarn is still left when the sweaters are done and to figure out what I can do with it.

One of the things that helps me to emotionally and creatively is challenges like using up the yarn bowl or working with scraps to see how far I can extend them or refashioning something that isn't working into (hopefully) something that does.

What helps you?

Talk soon - Myrna

Grateful - the willingness to try something new

  1. Oh Myrna, I'm so sorry that you're finding it difficult to continue with your new blog during the pandemic. However, I'd like you to know that your Wednesday and Friday blog posts are the highlight of my week. Your creativity with fabric, paint, yarn and jewellery are incredibly inspiring, and when you take sabbaticals from blogging, I always feel a bit sad.
I've been sewing for over 40 years (I'm 65 years old) and, for the past few months, I've been sewing and selling masks. Although it's repetitive, it is meditative as well. To add a bit of personality to these masks, I use my Cricut Maker to cut out decals requested by my customers. It's not a big business, but it gives me purpose.
I've always wanted to have my own sewing blog - I now have a domain name, but haven't delved into the website design process yet - and I'd like it to have a style similar to yours. None of this, "Just the facts, Ma'am" stitching blog, but a creative fabric-inspired lifestyle blog.
Please don't give up with your creativity or your blog. If we creatives support each other during this isolationist period, we will thrive.

    1. OH... that must have come out wrong. I do enjoy writing the blog and I'm not considering quitting. It's just that with readership being low still, there isn't a huge number of comments and they are always encouraging to let you know that what you are doing is valued. SO... I thought I'd ask for them. I'd encourage you to try blogging. I find it makes me more aware of details and of things to share/talk about. Creativity, especially sewing, is my favourite subject so I love when the conversation is two way.

  2. I recently discovered your new blog. I spend a very delightful weekend reading all of your post. Your creativity is very inspiring. It made me excited to sew. I just have some work stuff that I promised myself that I would finish before I start sewing again.

I'm sorry that this wave is hitting you hard. It is frustrating to being looking forward to something and to have plans changed when it is not your fault. One day, I don't know when, we are going to look back at this time period and be amazed at our ability to survive these shutdowns. .

    1. I will count myself "lucky" that I managed so well up until now. I think it was several things happening at once that tipped me over and I'll have to tip back.

I am so glad you're enjoying my blog and thrilled that you are returning to sewing. YES YES. Please share what you make. While you are getting those other things out of the way, are you planning a project? I find that's helpful.
